Some of you might be coming here and not really knowing what this thing is about. Perfectly understandable. So, let’s see about getting some of the basics out of the way.
Who?
I’m “Faust”, IT person by Day, Super Dad at Night (or at least I try). I started a blog on gaming and painting miniatures, that I plan to return to at some point. I built my own arcade machine, which was quite the project for me. Especially given the number of disapproving looks I would get from my High School Wood Shop teacher.
What?
Building a ‘home arcade machine’. Essentially, a big wooden cabinet holding a monitor and the electronics to play the classic video games of 70s, 80s, etc.
Originally people were hacking mice and keyboards to make custom arcade interfaces, but things have changed and you can find encoders, joysticks, buttons, etc. quite easily and for decent prices. You can even buy whole kits that you assemble yourself.
I discovered this ‘build your own arcade’ (byoac) thing after keyboard encoders had come on the market and things like spinners were just starting to become available. Still new-ish to where I could find websites of these early builders who did some amazing things, but also at a point where I could buy a lot online without having to make everything myself.
The “what” will most likely make more sense once I’m completed and share the finished product.
Why?
That’s a question I sometimes ask myself a lot! It’s certainly not an easy thing for me to do. It ends up costing a lot in time, money, and materials. As I mentioned earlier, there are pre-built kits and even arcade machines that you could buy, if you wanted.
For me, it’s a hobby, and a lot like customizing miniatures. I get an idea in my head, and I want to make that a reality. As much as my skillset will allow it. I could just run out and buy something, but it won’t have that personal touch. It won’t be customized just the way I want it, or look just like I want. There are some good reasons in my head as to “why”, but I think every person has to answer that question on their own terms.
Where?
Not sure this is that relevant, but it’s being built outdoors when the weather is nice and in the garage, when it’s not. It’s actually been a giant pain, trying to keep the garage tidy, and dealing with the ever changing weather. Word to the wise, do not run your router on MDF in the garage….the first time around I did that, and still had dust on the walls a year later after hosing the whole thing down.
When?
The plan was to have this done by end of Summer. Now I’m looking by end of Fall. Though I think there will be constant tinkering for a good long time.
How?
Not really my aim for this blog. I am a hobbyist and by no means a pro at this. Your best bet would be to start with the same forum I did:
I certainly will try my best at any questions, but I’m not going to tell people how to find illegal ROMs, etc.
